This week we hugged a house! This includes insulating and siding the home to keep it warmer and drier. On our first day the homeowner, Mrs. A, came outside to greet us, show us what the previous teams accomplished and what was left for us to do. As the third team to work on the home, we were presented with the outside of the home already having perlins (wood on the outside of the tin to fasten things to, similar to studs) and most of the green board foam insulation. By the end of the week, we finished the insulation, completed underpinning to keep water and cold out from under the home, and started siding. Each day we spent time with Mrs. A and her two children, sometimes even their two cousins! We enjoyed speaking with the family. The kids even used some of our foam board scraps to build their own dollhouses, working alongside us. On Thursday evening before we left, Mrs. A told us that she already noticed a difference. The cold air from her air conditioner was finally staying in the home. It kept it so cool that she had to use a blanket at night, which she never had to do before. On Friday before we left, the shy daughter at the home asked us for a group hug, which was sweaty but sweet and a fantastic way to end our week. They were appreciative of the work we did, and we are appreciative of their hospitality and willingness to allow us in their home and their hearts.

Our double crew team worked on repairs for Mrs. R’s trailer home while she was in the hospital. We began by reconstructing the front staircase using salvaged materials from the original structure, ensuring it was safe and stable. We also reinforced the front porch, correcting a sag in the middle by installing new joists and leveling the surface. Inside the home, we insulated the floors and added a barrier to keep the insulation in place. Subflooring and vinyl wood flooring were installed in both the living room and kitchen, significantly improving the comfort and appearance of the space. On the exterior, we repaired the tin roof by priming and applying SBS roofing to seal it from water intrusion. Termination bars were added to finish and secure the roof repairs. We were thrilled at the end of the week when Mrs. R came home from the hospital to see her repaired trailer home. She was very appreciative of the improvements and loved the gifted quilts

We were partnered up with Team Oceania 1. Though we had separate projects, we eventually merged into one team working on both projects together! The first thing we did was fix the steps, we repaired the previous team’s work. The next thing we did was put extra supports under the porch to keep the beams from sagging. We were also tasked with repairing the roof, and this involved applying a coat of primer to the existing tin roof, and adding a layer of SPS to better waterproof the trailer home. Inside the house, we repaired the homeowner’s floor. This involved replacing the vapor barrier, installation, and the sub flooring to her living room. Eventually finishing it off with vinyl flooring and trim in the kitchen which led to us staying longer on our last day. There was a VERY cute 13 year old Pomeranian named Jackson that we had to watch out for and keep entertained when finishing the flooring. Overall we had a great week, and accomplished more than we set out to do.

Our team was assigned a ramp project. Our week began fixing what was not done correctly the previous week. Re digging holes for the posts. Once we fixed that we were able to begin. Mother nature decided to give us a half-day on Tuesday. Wednesday we were able to continue and accomplished a lot. Our homeowner was very eager to have us complete the ramp and asked about the progress. She needed us to fully describe because she does not have eyes to see for herself. Each day we’re greeted by the neighborhood dogs, especially at lunchtime when we had our daily picnics. We were thankful to have a tent for shade and a fan to cool us down to work harder and longer. Thursday, we asked our homeowner if they would like to join us for lunch the following day. She gleefully accepted. The next day we are invited to have our lunch with her on a round table where we were able to eat and get to know her. She also enjoyed the gifts and quilts. We gave her and her aid. Friday afternoon we were thankful for the fundraiser from ASP to bring of ice pops to our work site. A refreshing break before continuing with placing new posts and spindles. The day was completed with a lot of the ramp done. We were not able to complete it, but the next team should be able to finish it in one to two days. Our homeowner was very excited to know this. And her grandson said he is excited to be able to get her out again to go to church when it is completed.

Our homeowners had soft, weak spots in parts of their floor which was unsafe for them to live in. Our task this week was to repair those spots and place flooring on top of it. We had two rooms to repair, and part of the hallway. We finished the flooring with trim around the sides to clean up the room. The homeowners loved to color of the flooring and the sturdiness of the floor. Outside we installed wooden two by six boards to reinforce the foundation of the home. Added on top of that was drip edge for extra protection against water penetration. The homeowners were touched by the great quilts we brought them. They loved our group so much they said they are going to miss us as we were leaving. It was a successful week as we were able to complete our project and create a meaningful connection with our homeowners.
